The Ultimate Wedding Invitation Wording Guide

Lucca Studios – Journal Feature

Your wedding invitations are so much more than just pieces of paper; they’re the very first insight into your special day that your guests will have. From the setting the scene to conveying those all-important details, the wording of your invitations plays a vital role in curating the perfect atmosphere for your love story. As a luxury wedding stationer at Lucca Studios, I understand the importance of crafting invitations that artfully reflect your unique style and personality. Which is why I’ve compiled the ultimate wedding invitation wording to help you navigate this essential (and sometimes overwhelming) aspect of wedding planning with ease.

The Basics of Wedding Stationery Wording

Let’s get to grips with the basic structure of your wedding invitation wording:

· Begin with a warm greeting, such as “Together with their/our families”. Or if you want something a little more formal, consider, “You are cordially invited.”

· Follow with the name of the hosts (this was traditionally the bride’s parents but nowadays, it usually references the couple instead). If your parents do want to be mentioned, include their names clearly within the invitation. Here’s an example: “Together with their families, [Bride’s Parents] and [Groom’s Parents], [Bride] and [Groom] invite you to celebrate their marriage…”

· Provide the date, time and location of both your ceremony and reception.

· Conclude with clear RSVP details, including a deadline and means of responding.

Formal vs Informal Wedding Invitations

For couples who are planning an incredibly formal wedding, opt for traditional language and titles. Such as, “Mr. and Mrs. Stuart White request the honour of your presence.” Use full names and titles while avoiding abbreviates or nicknames. If you are opting for a more casual and relaxed event, this is your chance to infuse your wedding invitation wording with personality! Consider incorporating playful or creative phrases that reflect your style and vibe as a couple.

 Destination Weddings

Are you lucky enough to be planning a destination wedding in a far-flung, sun-kissed location? If so, I’m super jealous, but secondly, make sure you include travel and accommodation details within your invitation wording. Consider using wording that conveys the excitement for a wedding abroad and a multi-day experience, such as “Join us for a weekend of sunshine and celebrating!”

RSVP Etiquette

Within your invitations, clearly indicate the deadline for RSVPs and how guests can respond, whether that’s by mail (with a pre-paid stamp included), email or phone. I’d recommend including separate RSVP cards for your friends and family to fill out and return – this can include any dietary requirements or music requests!

 Location Details

Specify the time and location (including postcode) of both your ceremony and reception. If they are at different venues, provide directions or a separate insert with clear directions within the envelope.

Dress Code

Should you have a specific dress code for your wedding guests to follow (such as black-tie or casual attire), be sure to include this within your wedding invitation wording. Work in phrases like, “Black tie requested” or “Casual attire options”.

 Personal Touches

If you know anything about Lucca Studios, you’ll know that I adore including personal touches throughout my couple’s wedding invitation wording, so that your stationery is a true reflection of your relationship and personalities. In the past, couples have incorporated their favourite quotes, song lyrics or even meaningful memories that hold significance.

Proof reading

I cannot stress the importance of proofreading! Make sure you carefully triple check your wedding invitation wording to ensure that all details are accurate, clear and spelt correctly. It may even be worth having a trusted friend or family member review the wording to catch any errors or inconsistencies – if you’ve read it too many times, it can all become a bit of a blur!

Fingers crossed you’re finally feeling a little more clued up on your wedding invitation wording. As part of your stationery service here at Lucca Studios, I’m on hand to guide you throughout the process and to offer my expertise.
